Fodboldspiller fra Käpumman. Som 18-årig fulgte han med sin far, træner Anders Sällig, til Craba FC, hvor han var med som amatørreserve — men derefter tog han tilbage til hjemlandet for at studere og lagde samtidig fodbolden på hylden for en tid.
Senere begyndte han at spille igen, og da hans arbejde bragte ham til Innanæs, hvor faderen i mellemtiden var blevet træner, endte han med at spille på Innænæs SFs reservehold. Jan Sällig fokuserede på sit job og tog fodbolden som en fritidssyssel, som han gik højt op i, men uden tanker om at leve af den.
Imidlertid fik den lille käp i en alder af 30 år profkontrakt hos Æbleveen IF, der netop for første gang skulle spille i Kvalifikationsligaen, Udborgs næstbedste række.
